Our dream

Jason and I have had this idea literally since the night we first met when I was 17 and Jason was 20. At the time we didn’t know when but we knew that some day we would sail the world together. Now, 30 years later, we finally know ‘when’! We have been very busy over the last 3 years getting prepared to begin the journey of our lives in July 2023!

Our sailboat, Starship, is currently in indoor storage up at Gimli where Jason has been working very hard at upgrades and getting her as safe and comfortable as possible. This summer we are shipping Starship to Thunder Bay where we will spend July, August and September sailing the Great Lakes. Come the fall, we will be in the Chicago area where we will take our mast down and ship it to Mobile, Alabama. We will then motor the Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers waiting out the Caribbean hurricane season. We plan to be in Key West, Florida for Christmas and continuing on from there. This website will document our travels as we go!

We have an overall plan for the three years but we also know that we need to be flexible to adjust as needed along the way. Especially when it comes to weather. We do not plan to circumnavigate as within our experiences ocean sailing we have learned that there are unfortunately places that are not safe to travel to. Within our three years though we want to see as much of the world as possible!

Jason and I are doing the trip with our youngest son, Dylan. Alex, our oldest son has already left home to attend college so we will be looking forward to having him come join us as much as possible along the way! Part of our travels include us sailing up to Sydney, Nova Scotia to attend his graduation from the Canadian Coast Guard College where in June 2024 he is lined up to graduate as a Marine Engineer Officer! We can’t miss that! For the three years we will be teaching Dylan grades 6, 7 and 8 on the boat.

We decided to create this website for two main purposes. Mainly it is to provide us with a place to document our travels with pictures, blogs and videos for us to look back at over the years. The other reason is to allow people to follow us as we have had so many express their excitement for us and that support is really special to us. As most can imagine, the road towards doing this trip has been challenging. We are letting go of many comforts and securities in our current life and heading out to the wild blue yonder! We have sold our house and quit our jobs in order to fulfill this dream that we just could never shake off. Jason and I have many years of sailing experience including heavy weather sailing. We know how ugly and difficult sailing can get and there will be challenging days ahead. There will be nights when unpredicted winds kick up creating the potential to drag anchor. There will be times we have no choice but to anchor in uncomfortable surges that will drive us crazy. We will sadly see the beginning effects of climate change. In past travels we have seen so much garbage in the ocean and we are saddened knowing the effects that has on marine wildlife. It is likely we will see some of that suffering. Then there will be the storms. We will plan ahead and do everything in our abilities to avoid them but the potential to get stuck in big winds and waves is likely.

The good news is the bad days end and the sun comes out. Outnumbering the challenging days will be all the incredible days! Gorgeous beach days enjoying pristine waters. Incredible sailing days where the winds perfectly fall into our sails carrying us along. We cannot wait to make new friends with other like minded liveaboard sailors and hearing all about their travels and experiences! We are excited to visit different countries and learn about different cultures and watch Dylan grow in those experiences.

We are temporarily jumping out of the work grind. We will be stepping out of the Monday to Friday drill where evenings and weekends are our only time together to do everything else we want to do in life. For a precious handful of years we will have control of our days and how we want to spend them and we can’t wait for that time together.
